Sharp Energy is one of the largest propane gas suppliers in the Mid-Atlantic Region. Yet our customer service has a personal touch you won’t often find with a propane supplier our size.

Sharp is a subsidiary of Chesapeake Utilities Corporation (NYSE:CPK). As a result, we’ve been providing reliable, dependable propane service on the Delmarva Peninsula for more than 35 years. With over 3 million gallons of storage capacity right here on the Mid-Atlantic Region, that means no disruption in service for our customers.

Who We Are

Our History

Sharp acquired Clarence E. Sharp Company, in Georgetown, DE. It was a propane distribution company called Sharpgas, Inc., but operating under the name Sharp Energy. As a result, we were able to consolidate Chesapeake’s propane distribution operations.
Soon after Sharpgas, we acquired Kellam Energy, Inc. in Belle Haven, VA. It was a propane and oil products distribution company.

Row of homes along a lake Also in 1996, Chesapeake Utilites constructed the first underground piped propane system. This was for the Plantations Development in Lewes, DE  and served 375 homes.

1997 Sheldon Gas CompanyIn 1997, Sharp acquired to gas companies: Tri-County Gas Company in Salisbury, MD. And also Sheldon Gas Company in Dover, DE.

homes along a lakefrontIn 2002, we needed to provide the conveniences of a metered delivery system to communities where natural gas was not available. And so, the Community Gas Systems division of Sharp Energy was formed.

We formed the largest community served by a community propane gas system. It is located in Selbyville, DE with 1700 homes and businesses.

A Sharp Energy propane start-up was initiated in Chester County, PA. Office is located in Honey Brook, PA.

In 2007, Sharp Energy community gas systems installed over 2,600 meters for newly constructed homes between 2007 and 2011. This was an average of over 500 per year.

Propane supplier truck.Sharp Energy acquired the operating assets of Virginia LP Gas, Inc. based in Exmore, VA. As a result, a propane start-up was initiated in Cecil County, MD.

Sharp Energy introduced the Pink bobtail to the Community, sponsoring the Susan G. Komen Organization.

Sharp Energy started a location in the Poconos, PA.

By the end of 2011, Sharp CGS had installed community gas systems in 60 developments. As a result, we served over 6,500 customers in Delaware, Maryland & Pennsylvania.

As of January 2012, the combined storage capacity for all active CGS communities exceeded 622,000 gallons of propane.

In 2013, Sharp signed up first AutoGas Customer.

In 2016, Sharp started a new propane supplier location in Anne Arundel, MD.

Signed up first Alliance Propane Service Customer BJ’s.

We expanded AutoGas offerings to Jupiter and Jacksonville, FL.
